STANDING IN THE GAP FOR THE CHURCH

Forty days of focussed prayer and fasting 20 June – 29 July

FAITH FOR A CHURCH, FAITH FOR A CITY

2 Chronicles 7:14 If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Eph:20-23 All this energy issues from Christ; God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules the church. The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ's body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence.

Devotion - Day 29

Approaching the Throne

All prayer is an approach to the throne of God. Prayer is not a casual or trivial act but an amazing privilege. God has given us constant, instant access to His throne. We can approach at any time and as often as we like. In fact, God is disappointed if we do not come often and with freedom.

1. Approach, remembering it is a throne of grace.
Justice is its foundation (Ps 89:14), but it is a throne of grace. The book of Revelations pictures the Lamb of God upon the throne, and 26 times Christ is called the Lamb.

2. Approach the throne with confident boldness.
The word parrēsia in Hebrews 4:16 means freedom; unreservedness of speech; the absence of fear in speaking boldly; hence, confidence; and cheerful courage! This is exactly the glorious freedom God gives you in entering His presence

3. Approach the throne with openness and sincerity.
God knows every aspect of the need you bring before him but He still expects you to fully and openly share it with Him. It is an act of humility to acknowledge your total dependence on God and your desperate need of Him. To presume on God’s blessing is arrogant and based in pride. James 4:6 teaches us that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

4. Approach the throne with faith.
A throne is a place where royal answers are given. Where needs are presented and discussed. It is a place where the King makes decisions. Remember as a child of God you don’t come as a vagrant or beggar, hoping to get crumbs and leftovers. You come as a prince or princess and member of the royal family. You come as an official of the King’s court. You come as the kingdom and prayer partner of the Son of the King. Thus approach in faith.
